Description

Tanjore Paintings are a form of art prevalent in Tamil Nadu and named after the town of Tanjore or Thanjavur.

Tanjore painting ranks among the greatest traditional art forms for which India is noted worldwide, these has a unique place in the history of Indian painting, in that it houses the 11th century Chola wall paintings in the Brihadeeswarar temple. Thanjavur paintings continue to be made even to the present day, These paintings, although originally made on wooden planks and then on cloth canvas backed by a wooden frame, were adapted onto fabrics especially South Indian silk textiles. Artists have taken this old form of art and over the years combined it with other styles to create mixed media arts. Tanjores are also done on mirrors, glass and canvas. The idea of applying gold foil is unique to this traditional art, so this same style is taken and recreated on different mediums.
